[ It's one of those things where your day is fucked and you make that hairpin turn a touch too late -- or the road's not as cooperative as you like and one thing leads to another, and your car gets totalled, while you end up with a split lip, bruised ribs, and a possible concussion which necessitates a trip to the ER.
Damn it, she finds herself thinking, when the sirens wail and bloody hell, she's fine, really; she'd just taken a nasty bump to the head and had seen stars (quite literally, she didn't know that's a thing that actually happens) but otherwise can form complete sentences, like not that hospital, please, because Chuck's a surgeon in the place and at this point a good few of the nurses and patient service assistants already know who she is, and she'd like to be spared the humiliation -- and Chuck's bitching -- thank you very much.
But they route around to that hospital anyway, and it's a pain in the ass because there are clearly people who need to be seen to much more urgently than she does; just give her painkillers, a little bit of disinfectant for the bleeding lip and she'll be outta your hair, yeah? But then someone recognises her as Chuck's girl and she's sure someone had pretty much gone to fetch him (of all things).
...Yeah. She's getting out of here, and who's going to stop her? Certainly not this pounding headache. Or the copper taste of blood in her mouth. Ugh. ]
As you were, ladies. [ Raleigh mutters when she starts towards the exit, past the service assistants at the counter. ]
[He won't admit to it, and he's still acts pretty irritated when a nurse comes and interrupts him when he's making rounds on his patients but when she says Raleigh Becket's in the ER, his heart definitely skips a beat. It's got to be breaking several privacy laws, to be discussing it at all, especially when she goes on to say that it's just a concussion and some bruises but they can gross that bridge when they come to it.
He dares her to try and sue him for breaking HIPPA, since he's not her attending doctor, he technically doesn't have any right to know what's going on with her treatment but she's also trying to leave against medical advice and if a nurse has to come get him from another department to stop her-- then she hasn't a single leg to stand on.
Chuck's not mad. Kind of wants to say I told you so even if he's one to talk when it comes to driving fast and taking chances. But he hasn't crashed, now has he? If anything, he's exasperated that he has to come down to the ED at all to try and corral her because aren't you supposed to be an adult, Raleigh, aren't you actually several years older than him? He's not a security guard and she's being stupid and if nothing's wrong, then it won't kill her to wait until she's discharged because it's not like she's going to go drive herself home. Her car's fucked.
She'll make it to the exit to the lobby and then she'll run into him, in all his scrubs and white coat glory, arms crossed over his chest.]
[ It makes her cagey, hospitals -- it's never a good thing, and Raleigh's only managed to shake half of that irrational dislike off. Yancy had been here for the longest time, and a few years later, so had Tendo, but Tendo had gotten discharged; it was only by virtue of his close friendship with Raleigh that she'd stuck around for as long as it took to see him get well (and Chuck had been a nice distraction from time to time, too).
But other than that, Raleigh's always preferred to give hospitals a wide berth, only popping in from time to time when it's absolutely necessary. On the other hand, he needn't worry about her suing him for breaking HIPPA; the thought of it hasn't even come up in her mind when she nearly bumps into him in all his scrubbed, doctorly glory. Raleigh stops short, and is irritated by the fact that they saw fit to send him down just for her. ]
Aren't you breaking some kind of oath for this, Dr. Hansen?
[ She's fine, she's really all right, babe. A&E just isn't kosher with her, and she's just seen a few others come in who need more attention than she does. ]
[A law maybe but he never took an oath that said I shall not annoy my girlfriend. Not cause any harm, yeah but that's completely different from this particular situation and emotional, whiny Raleigh version of harm doesn't count.]
[ If he ever took an oath that says he should not annoy his girlfriend, he's already broken it about an obscene number of times over. ]
Left my purse in the car. [ Raleigh drawls, because she's in the mood to be sassy. She'd cross her arms around her chest but her ribs hurt when she moves her arms and it's too much of a hassle. ] Where are you going?
Which one is it? [ Remind her to give that one a wide berth. A part of her doesn't want to make a scene, because some people are definitely starting to look their way, and she exhales. ]
Look, I'm fine. Get me a bunch of painkillers and I'll be out of your hair, yeah?
[ ...Damn. Chuck is too no-nonsense for his own good, if you asked her, because it's really frustrating to have a smart-as-hell boyfriend. ]
I missed a turn. [ It happens, she got distracted, and it was a dangerous risk she took entirely on impulse. She exhales, and rubs her hand over her eyes, for a moment looking briefly contrite. ]
Sorry about worrying you. [ No use hiding it, Chuck wouldn't have come down so quickly if he didn't give a shit. ] It was a pretty stupid mistake. Are you getting off work soon?
[There is a dumb blonde joke waiting to be made right here. But he'll be the bigger person and not make it.]
You're right, it was stupid. [Because they both know that she's a better driver than that, that she pretty much lives inside of cars and missing a turn, making a bad judgment like that is not her style.]
Not even close. You might as well hang around here until I can give you a ride home.
[ Good call. Making that joke will get you unlaid for weeks. Bigger Person Chuck is wise. ]
I know. [ And she'd walked out with only the injuries she has; that's really fucking lucky. But she glances dubiously back at the A&E; she's supposed to waste the time away here while waiting for him to knock off? ]
...I don't want to stay here. [ Not in the A&E, not when there's nothing to distract her. ] How about this, I chill on the roof, and you can come and find me when you're done? [ beat. ] Sitting around here will make me nuts.
[No, Chuck doesn't like that plan either because no one's going to be watching her up on the roof and she's most likely going to be fine, a little more bruised and battered but not in any immediate danger.
Leaving her in the ER though might make the nurses and doctors there crazy and he shares their pain. He really does.]
[ She's twenty nine, not twelve! She doesn't need people watching her; it's not like she'd topple off the roof, right? Raleigh is just about to indignantly make a point about that but then contemplates the merits of being in Chuck's office.
Or agreeing and wandering off after, because Raleigh's extremely aware of the fact that he has a job to do and that job is not babysitting her - she just really dislikes ERs. Besides, the quicker he's done, the faster they can go home. ]
...Fine. [ She'll just wander out once he goes back to work. Raleigh pauses, then starts for the elevators to the upper floors. ] It's still at the same old place, right?
[ She doesn't even know what the hell that means but goes along anyway, sulking as you please, until they reach his office. Raleigh's curious, poking around at the medical text she sees, before rounding over to his desk. ]
Nice place. Is this where you normally sleep over?
[It means loud noises and flashing lights. If a hospital is calm, Raleigh, it's a good thing. Chuck can totally tell that she's sulking and he's failing at not smirking because of it.]
Nah, there's a sleeping room closer to the floor. You think you'll be able to entertain yourself all day?
